The Ministry of Transport is seeking initial feedback on options to reduce the risks of alcohol- and drug-related impairment in aviation, maritime and rail, as announced by the Associate Transport Minister, Hon Craig Foss on 10 March 2015. While this consultation is targeted to organisations in these sectors, the Ministry is happy to receive submissions from other interested parties.

The Ministry of Transport has released a discussion paper to help submitters. The discussion paper provides useful information on the issue, and proposes 10 possible options that could help reduce these risks. At this stage, we do not have a preferred option.
The consultation follows the Transport Accident Investigation Commission’s final report following its investigation into the hot-air balloon crash near Carterton in 2012. The Commission recommended regulatory changes to strengthen the management of alcohol and drugs in the aviation, maritime and rail sectors. Submissions will help the Ministry propose the most appropriate response to the recommendations found in this report.
